1,000 Books Before Kindergarten and 500 Books Before Middle School
Chesapeake Public Library engages readers through programs and events that encourage a lifelong love of reading. We are excited to announce two new self-directed programs designed to get children and families in the habit of reading every day.
The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program challenges families and caregivers to read 1,000 books to a child before they begin kindergarten. Reading a book to young children and infants promotes bonding and increases language acquisition skills. Imagine the ways reading 1,000 books together can positively affect your child’s development!
The 500 Books Before Middle School challenge encourages elementary grades (K-5) children to enjoy reading independently. Frequent readers practice positive habits that promote literacy and potentially increase reading abilities. A continuing interest and love of books can have effects that last a lifetime!
Each of these programs will run through the digital platform, Beanstack. Participants of each program will advance- earning badges and receiving prizes at escalating stages of progress. Although the programs are run entirely online, kids will collect digital badges and pick up rewards from their local branch.
